So our power is out...

Came home from kids soccer and had no power. In the last 30 minutes:

- my wife was amazed that I was able to somehow open the garage door

- I showed her how to light the stove ( gas stove with electric igniter)

- I had to point out that we have no Wi-Fi

There’s more but I’ll stop...

At some point people will not be able to do anything at all when the power goes out.

...did your wife not know about matches?

My grandparents used to have a gas range with a push button igniter like a grill. I miss the sound of it.

Haha - I’m responding to you right?

And it amazed me even 30 years ago how many people would be shocked that the phone would work when the power was out - as long as you didn’t have a cordless phone that had to be plugged in!

I think she wasn’t sure what to do with the match and didn’t want any part of it. I think in her mind she’s afraid it will blow up.

I’m v ery thankful that my heat and stove work as normal without power. As a kid we had well water (and no generator for the pump) and had a few outages that stretched longer than a week. Misery.

One of my childhood homes had a gas stove where the main burner would take forever to ignite no matter how many people looked at it. At age 12 I figured out it was just easier (and in fact, safer) to use the grill lighter.

We don’t have heat, and the stove requires a match, but it’s not cold here ( 45 degrees) and we are lucky that the power is never out long.

Com ed is currently saying another 45 minutes.

I was nice and lit the match first before turning the gas on so she wouldn’t freak out.

Now if I was home alone...

I keep forgetting to find a corded phone to keep just for that. I probably won’t ever use it but it would be nice to have just in case

It’s ALL chewy as he ll, but there’s all kinds of different flavors - I like the spicy and peppery stuff.

As a kid, our stove had a pilot light. It usually lit fairly quick, but the pilot light went out regularly.

There’s probably some brown sugar or whatever on that one. Different flavors of jerky are all the rage now it seems.

The only city services that worked for us after hurricane Gustav were water and sewer. For two weeks we depended on a portable generator and a camp stove.

Fun times.

One of the nice things about living in this city? Buried power lines.

I once was delayed leaving on a move because I parked in the garage overnight, and the power went out. The garage was separate from the house, and the only way in was through the overhead door. I couldn’t get in to manually release it. Just a small reminder if you're building your own garage  to never do that.

I was just talking with my wife wondering if it would be so bad not having data plans in our cell phone.  It’s finny how much we start to depend on that stuff. We didn’t have any of it as kids, not even voice cell phones.

Yeah, they’re above ground here, so we get frequent but short outages.

This one seems to be equipment - they’re next door working, no lines are down.

So true! I wouldn’t go without a data plan now.

In fact, ATT hates me because I have a very old unlimited plan that they can’t force me off of.

Oh yeah, they hate you. I think they are starting to get tired waiting for you people to die, and none of you can be coaxed off that plan.

I’d start looking over your shoulder when you’re out.

Above ground power lines here as well.  Two years ago I bought a pair of UPS to run the modem (I have fiber to the house that doesn’t seem to go out when the power does) and the main google WiFi router.  Has worked great and kept the WiFi going for at least 5 hours after power went out during Harvey.

Nice! If I were to do that, I’d just go full on with a diesel generator.

There is a battery backup on the basement sump pump, but it would be nice to have the generator for any long term outage.

I grew up on a house without electricity. I once had a baby sitter who nearly burned down our house waiting for the propane stove to light automatically.

We have natural gas that, as far as I can tell, hasn’t gone out ever.  We looked at a gas generator when we built our house, but the extra $10k wasn’t in our budget.
